Five Better Questions to Take into an Authority Appointment
Replace broad uncertainty with precise questions about missing evidence, next steps and written confirmation.
Ask questions that can produce an action
“Is everything okay?” is understandable, but it gives the person across the desk little structure. A concise question linked to a record or next step is easier to answer and easier for you to note accurately.
Consider asking:
- Which specific evidence is still missing, and how should I submit it?
- Is a copy sufficient, or should I present the original?
- What reference should I include in future correspondence?
- If a decision is not made before my current card expires, what written confirmation applies to my situation?
- Where can I find the current official instruction for the next step?
Write down the answer and the source
Record the date, office, question and answer soon after the conversation. If the point is important or ambiguous, ask whether it can be confirmed in writing. Do not secretly record a conversation.
Where an answer concerns refusal, appeal rights, loss of status or another serious legal consequence, take the written material to a German immigration lawyer promptly.
