Working Backwards from Your Permit Expiry Date

A calm preparation timeline for gathering records, checking authority instructions and leaving room for unanswered questions.

Six months out: locate the uncertainty

Start by confirming the expiry printed on your current title and checking the website of the authority responsible for your registered address. Procedures differ by city, and appointment or online submission routes can change.

Build a simple list of recent events: employer changes, address moves, family changes and lengthy travel. This is not your application. It is a way to spot facts that deserve an informed answer before time becomes tight.

Three to four months out: collect by category

Group records into identity and status, housing, employment or livelihood, insurance, and any route-specific evidence. Use the authority’s current list as the starting point. Note issue dates: an old document may be useful for planning but too old for submission.

Avoid sending a bundle simply because you have it. First understand what the chosen submission channel requests and how it handles later additions.

In the final weeks

Keep copies of submissions and confirmations. Check that the authority can reach you and that your name is visible at your postal address. If you face an expired status, refusal, urgent travel need or unclear continuation rights, seek qualified legal advice rather than relying on a general checklist.
